The traceability chain

Metrological traceability is an unbroken chain of comparisons, each with a stated uncertainty, linking your instrument back to a national or international standard. For a foundry lab that chain looks like:

Every link must have its own certificate. If the permeability nozzle or the hardness block used to calibrate your instrument has no current, traceable certificate, the chain is broken at that link and everything below it is unsupported.

Not every document called a "certificate" carries the same weight. A certificate issued and released by the manufacturer or an accredited lab is very different from a PDF a third party uploaded. A trustworthy verification page states the source plainly - issued vs merely uploaded-and-unverified - so an auditor is not fooled by a lookalike.

QR verification

The strongest form of this is a QR sticker on the instrument that opens the live certificate history: the readings, the master standards with their traceability, the calibration and due dates, and - in a mature system - the competency of the person who calibrated it. What makes a calibration certificate traceable?
An unbroken chain of comparisons back to a national standard (NPL/NIST), where every reference used in the calibration - weights, nozzles, hardness blocks - has its own current, traceable certificate with a stated uncertainty. The certificate must list those references and their certificate numbers and dates.
What is the difference between an issued certificate and an uploaded one?
An issued certificate is produced and released by the manufacturer or an accredited laboratory that performed the calibration. An uploaded certificate is a document someone else attached and that has not been verified by the calibration provider. A good verification page shows this source distinction clearly.
