An automotive-supplying foundry has to prove its measuring equipment is controlled. Here is how the interval decision and the IATF 16949 laboratory clauses actually fit together.
How to set a calibration interval
There is no universal number. An interval is a risk decision based on how much the instrument is used, how stable it is, how critical its measurement is, and its history of drift. A practical pattern for a foundry lab:

Whatever you choose, the interval must be justified, monitored and adjusted if the instrument drifts - and the justification recorded.
The IATF 16949 clauses
Clause 7.1.5.3.1 (internal laboratory) requires a defined laboratory scope and technical requirements covering procedures, competency of the laboratory personnel, capability traceable to the relevant process standard, customer requirements and review of records.
Clause 7.1.5.3.2 (external laboratory) requires an external calibration source to have a defined scope and either accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 (or a national equivalent, with the service in the accreditation scope) or evidence that it is acceptable to the customer.
The equipment-manufacturer (OEM) route
Clause 7.1.5.3.2 also states that calibration may be performed by the equipment manufacturer when a qualified laboratory is not available for a given instrument - provided the internal-laboratory requirements of 7.1.5.3.1 are met. The IATF's own FAQ confirms the manufacturer of the inspection/test equipment is qualified to calibrate what it designed and built. The organisation must obtain customer approval before using an OEM for calibration.
Personnel competency
7.1.5.3.1 explicitly requires competency of the people who calibrate. That means a maintained competency (skill) matrix showing who is authorised for which instrument, with training records and re-assessment dates - not just a signature on a certificate.

- The calibration scope and procedures.
- Traceability of the reference standards used (their certificates and dates).
- Personnel competency records for the person who calibrated.
- The interval justification and calibration history.
- Customer approval where the OEM route is used.
