Moisture, compactability & clay-test calibration
Moisture and compactability set the mood of the whole sand system. The instruments behind them - balances, driers, rammers, sieves - each need their own traceable check.
The daily control tests
A green-sand lab usually runs, every shift or every day: moisture, compactability, specimen weight, permeability, green compression strength, dry compression strength and methylene-blue (active clay). Three of those - moisture, compactability and clay - lean on general lab instruments (balances, driers, sieves, burettes) that are easy to overlook when only the strength machine and permeability meter get "calibrated".
Moisture analysers & balances
Whether moisture is measured by loss-on-drying (weigh, dry, re-weigh) or a moisture analyser, the result is only as good as the balance and the drying temperature:
- Verify the balance with traceable reference masses across its range; check level and repeatability.
- Verify the drier/analyser temperature against a traceable thermometer.
- Cross-check the analyser against a gravimetric loss-on-drying result on the same sample.
Compactability & the rammer
Compactability is a dimensional measurement - how much a column of sand compresses under a set ramming energy. Its calibration is really the rammer (ram mass and drop height) and the specimen tube dimensions, plus the scale or ruler that reads the result. Verify ram mass with a traceable weight, drop height with a traceable length reference, and tube bore with a gauge.
Methylene-blue clay & grain fineness (GFN)
The methylene-blue test estimates active clay by titration, so calibration is about volumetric accuracy (burette / pipette) and the reference solution. Grain fineness number (GFN) comes from a sieve stack - use certified test sieves and verify the balance used to weigh each fraction; a shaker with the wrong timing or amplitude also skews the distribution.
Intervals
Balances and thermometers used daily are usually verified at least annually with more frequent in-house checks (a single reference mass daily). Sieves are inspected for wear and re-certified periodically. Record everything under your quality system - see intervals & IATF 16949.
